The Effects of Computer Simulations on Students' Success and Attidues in teaching Chemistry
Abstract
An important progress in computer technology and software has been realized
in recent years and using of the computer in education increased as well as. Thecomputer-based education (CBE) has been enriched using simulation andanimation. The aim of this study is to carry out the effect of computer
simulation and animation on the students' success on chemistry subject andattitudes of students into chemistry. A computer-based learning packetconcerning solutions is prepared for this purpose. The following tests were
applied as pretest before teaching solution chemistry by conventional andcomputer-based packet: Achievement test, logical thinking ability test, chemistryattitudes scale, computer attitudes scale, and simulation attitudes scale. The
study was carried out during 2001-2002 school period with 84 high schoolstudents between ages 15 and 18 of 10th grade. The students were divided intotwo groups as Control Group (KG) and Experimental Group (DG) and were
taught using conventional and computer based approaches, respectively.
According to p= 0,05 understanding significance the results indicated that theexperimental group students' attitudes to computer, to chemistry and to
simulations show a significant and positive change due to students' controlgroups. It's the same with their success toward chemistry.

Misconceptions in Biology education and Conceptual Change Strategies
Abstract
One of the factors that affects the learning and student performance is
misconceptions. The purposes of this study are to; (i) define misconception and
give information about the related constructs, (ii) reveal how misconceptions can
be formed, (iii) expose some research findings about misconceptions in the field
of biology and, (iv) propose some conceptual change techniques (e.g., word association,
structural communication, diagnostic tree, concept maps, clinical interview,
conceptual change texts, analogy, prediction- observation, and
explanation) that can be used in the diagnosis and remedy of misconceptions.
The importance of misconceptions regarding biology and science education is
discussed and suggestions are proposed.

An Analysis of University Science Instructors' Examination Questions According to the Cognitive Levels
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze exam questions prepared by university
lecturers worked at different science departments according to the cognitive
levels of Bloom taxonomy. In the study, 787 exam questions from the physics,
chemistry, biology, and mathematics departments were collected and analyzed
by using the document analysis method. In A scale prepared by the researcher
based on the Bloom's Taxonomy was used. Results showed that 81% of the
questions were at the first three levels according to the Bloom taxonomy and
19% of the questions were at the last three levels in the taxonomy. This means
that exam questions used to assess university students' achievement levels are at
low cognitive levels. For future studies, the learning levels of university students
should be investigated in depth and in this process, the cognitive domain of the
Bloom taxonomy should be taken into consideration.

Brain Drain and Turkey
Abstract
In this article, brain drains as a concept is explained and the causes to brain
drain are presented. Besides the situation in Turkey concerning brain drain is
examined and various results and suggestions based on a research are presented.
The method used for this study is to review the literature. In the article, it is
stated that the reasons for brain drain are: socio-political effects, working
conditions, the concept of labor force planning, colonial roots studying abroad,
research opportunities and conscious policies. In the article it is also stated that
the issue of the brain drain should not misinterpreted. As we live now in an
information technology dominated age, movement of educated and qualified
people might not produce serious consequences for their home country. In fact
all countries can take advantage of the educated and qualified people where ever
they live and work.

Family Involvement and Social Development in Early Childhood
Abstract
This study examines the relation between family involvement level and
social-psychological development of children of early childhood in relation with
different aspects of family life.
The sample consisted of 200 preschool children from four different school and
their parents. Teachers rated the psychosocial development level by a
development form Developmental Observation Form for Early Childhood (DOFEC) and Family
Involvement Questionnaire (FIQ) that was applied to the families. A personal information
form developed by the researcher collected demographic data
related with the child and the family. The results of the study demonstrate that
the basic involvement style of the families is seen as family-school conferencing.
Results also show that observation of the teachers can be used as an useful data
for understanding family involvement. Relation between psychosocial
development and family involvement is positively correlated.

postmodernism, information society, and post-Fordism and perceived as
'globalization' and 'total quality management' as means of these changes. In this
context, it is focused on concepts as new science, postmodern state/efficient
state, changing economics: Neo-Liberalism/efficient economy, new
management/efficient management, 'learning organization'/'learning school',
'new public management'/'new school management' and total quality
management.
The consumerist attitude of total quality management, particularly, criticized
from the perspective of citizenship that is the main perspective of Turkish

Examining the Adolescents' Smoking According to Their Peer Pressure Levels and Gender
Abstract
In this research the difference in the students' smoking according to their peer
pressure levels and gender is examined. This study is executed in 2001-2002
academic year on 718 2nd grade high school students (311 girls and 407 boys)
between ages 15-17 who are impartially selected by cluster sampling and
random sampling techniques. A Peer Pressure Scale, developed by the author, is used to
determine the peer pressure. Information about the frequency of
students' smoking is calculated according to the answers of students. The
relations between variables and the difference between scores are analyzed by
chi-square test. The results show that, there is a significant relation (p< 0.05)
between peer pressure levels and smoking. It is, however, determined that
gender does not bring about a meaningful differentiation on adolescents'
smoking. Existence of a relation between smoking and peer pressure among
adolescents makes it necessary for the schools' psychological counseling and
guidance services to cover studies about decreasing peer pressure.

Rewarding and Disciplinary Approaches Toward Primary and Secondary School Teachers
Abstract
The aim of this research is to determine the expectations and perceptions of
teachers concerning the rewarding and discipline approaches for the primary
and secondary school teachers. 1814 teachers working at primary and secondary
schools of Manisa Province formed the population of research, and 452 of them
formed the sample (female 217, male 235). In this research, a Likert type scale
that was developed by the researcher, called Rewarding and Disciplinary Approaches toward Primary
and Secondary School Teachers was used. Some of the valuable findings of the research are
as follow: 1) There is a significant difference between the
perceptions of the teachers about the rate of occurrence of the following
sub-dimensions: evaluation, rewarding and discipline depending on teaching
experience; evaluation, rewarding and discipline depending on the stages of
schools where they work; evaluation and rewarding depending on whether they
have been rewarded or not (p<.05) 2) There is a significant difference between
the perceptions of the teachers about the rate of occurrence of the following
sub-dimensions: discipline and evaluation depending on teaching experience;
evaluation, rewarding and discipline depending on their major fields of study;
rewarding and discipline depending on the types of school they have graduated
from; evaluation and discipline depending on their sexes; evaluation, rewarding
and discipline depending on the levels of schools where they work (p<.05). 3)
Both primary and secondary schoolteachers think that internal rewards are
much more valuable than external ones.
